Terra firma
Solid ground
The perfect place to plant?
Spades pierce the soil
to rousing cheers.
Grand plans for this field

Work the soil
Day and night
Work and till
Work until
the time is right

With an ear to the ground
and eyes to the skies
now is the acceptable time
to plant.
Lovingly.
Hopeful and hope-filled.
Careful and care-filled.
No detail overlooked.

The perfect spot for the perfect field.
Seeds scattered and sown.
Fertile soil
Life-giving water
Plenty of sun

Anticipation
Anticipation
Germination
Life!
Growth!
Rapid growth!
Faces follow the sun

Alive
Loved
Nurtured
Admired
The field filled

Stalk upon stalk upon stalk
rising high and standing tall
What a glorious sight!
Glimmering
Shimmering
Birds and bees
spreading pollen and seeds
carried only so far.

Glaring sun
Days of drought
Days of doubt
Shallow roots
cannot sustain such weight

Harvest looming
Evening cooling
Ripe for the picking
Some are gathered
and sent
to farmers markets
to funerals
to hospitals
to brighten someone’s day

Others remain
Left to wither
Left to weather
frosty nights and blustery days
Life depleting
Drying and dying

That perfect field?
Not so perfect now
Change of seasons
Change of ways
Uncertainty
Perplexity
Which way is the sun?

Seeds
lying in wait
in heads bowed down
Still standing
No less majestic
Hidden splendor
longing for next season’s rebirth

All have purpose
All have beauty
All have seeds to share
Dream on, field.
Dream on
